Adobe adds AI Masking & content-ware healing to Lightroom 2022
New features make it easier to remove or adjust objects or people.
Adobe Lightroom 2022: AI Masking & content-ware healing. The latest features of the new Adobe Lightroom 2022 that has just been introduced are all about easier selection of people or objects to adjust their colors or remove them entirely. The core features, AI-powered masking and content-aware removal, are available in Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera RAW.
Adobe introduced AI-powered masking to Lightroom last year. Now, it expands on that with more specific tools that let you easily select people, even individual body parts, objects, or the background with a single click.
The first of these is “Select People”, which uses Adobe's AI Sensei to select people and groups or even specific body parts such as face skin, body skin, eyes, teeth, lips, hair and more. It's surprisingly simple to use: when you load a photo, Adobe's AI automatically identifies and lists each person in a scene as “All People” and “Person 1”, “Person 2”, “Person 3”, etc. Then you can select , say face 2, and it will allow you to select facial skin, body skin, teeth, and so on. From there, you can tweak hues, boost clarity, or whatever else you want to do.
“Item Selection” makes this easier in two ways. To select a rose, say, you can simply paint it with the brush or draw a rectangle around it, and the AI will automatically enhance the edges to create an accurate mask. Similarly, you can easily select an entire image background with a single click, instead of having to reverse a theme selection like before.
If you're interested in removing objects completely (also known as “healing”), Content-Aware Remove will help. You can simply draw a mask roughly around the object to be removed and the AI will adaptively fill the background based on the environment. It includes a Refresh option and allows you to select the sampling area for better control.
Other new features for Lightroom include “Compare While Editing” which lets you load two images to better match them, along with GPU performance updates. Lightroom Classic gets a new left-right panel toggle if you prefer to see the color controls on the left, as well as faster imports from mobile devices (Windows only). In Camera Raw, Adobe is introducing masking curves and HDR support for displays, although the latter is currently in tech preview. Updates will now be rolling out to Adobe's Creative Cloud — for more, see Lightroom blog.
